The current name of each island or atoll (bold and
underlined) is followed by a (code) to facilitate
cross-referencing with the Annotated Index of Island Names in the
Western Islands below. Each section contains historical
names spelled out exactly as found in the literature. A name
followed by an asterisk (*) denotes an island part of a group, i.e.:
Maron* (H) is an island in the Hermit group (code H). The names
of individual islands are often cited by themselves in the literature
to refer to or describe the group of islands to which they belong. See also Annotated
Index of Place Names in the Western Islands.
The listings are from West to East.
Bismarck Archipelago (BA) Named after German chancellor Otto von Bismarck
it is a vast archipelago covering 19,200 sq mi (49,730 sq km) and
consisting of volcanic islands and islets in the Bismarck Sea, southwestern
Pacific Ocean along the eastern and northern coasts of Papua
New Guinea. Credit for the "discovery" of the
Bismarck Archipelago is usually given to the Dutch explorer
Willem Schouten in 1616 but it is the Spanish explorer Ynigo Ortiz
de Retes who, with his ship San Juan sailed from Tidor to “New
Spain” for King Philip II of Spain and made route north to "discover"
Wuvulu and Aua islands on August 19, 1545. He was followed by the
Spanish explorer Antonio de Herera who travelled through the Archipelago
in the early 1600's (see Early Maps).
The Bismarck Archipelago includes New
Britain to the South (the largest island), New
Ireland,
New Hanover, the St. Matthias Group (Emirau and Mussau Islands),
the Admiralty
Islands and the Western Islands. The larger islands are
mountainous, have some active volcanoes and the highest peak,
Mount Sinewit, 7,999 ft (2,438 m), is found in the Baining
Mountains on the Gazelle Peninsula on New Britain. The
main products are copra, cacao, coffee, tea, and rubber. Copper
and gold are also mined. The inhabitants are mostly Melanesians. The
area became a German protectorate in 1884. Australia
seized the group in World War I and they were mandated to Australia
by the League of Nations in 1920. Japan built and operated
several naval and air bases in the islands during World War II. In
1947, Australia received trusteeship over the group from the
United Nations. The archipelago became part of Papua New Guinea when it became independent in 1973.The Admiralty Islands and
the Western
Islands form the northwest end of the Bismarck Archipelago.
